Water purification technologies used

Water treatment plants rely on more than one technology to purify water, the most important of which are the filtration system and the reverse osmosis (RO) system.

What is a filtration system?

Filtration is the process of purifying water using filters such as sand or activated carbon to remove impurities, sediment, and suspended particles. This process helps improve the taste and odor of the water and prepares it for further purification stages.

What is an RO system?

RO, or reverse osmosis, is an advanced water purification technology that uses a thin membrane to allow only water to pass through while blocking salts and contaminants. Therefore, this system is used in desalination plants to produce highly purified water.

The difference between filtration and RO

Filtration removes impurities and sediment present in the water, while the RO system removes dissolved salts, heavy metals, and micro-pollutants, providing a higher level of water purity.

Why are the two systems used together?

In most water treatment plants, filtration is used as a preliminary stage before the RO system to remove large impurities and protect the reverse osmosis membranes, which helps to increase the efficiency of the purification plant.

What is a Mixed Bed system?
A mixed bed is a water treatment unit containing a mixture of two types of resins within a single tank: a cationic resin to remove positive ions such as calcium and magnesium, and an anionic resin to remove negative ions such as chloride and sulfate. These two types work together to remove dissolved salts from the water and produce highly purified water.
Mixed Bed relies on ion exchange technology, where water passes through a layer of mixed resin. The cationic resin replaces positive ions with hydrogen ions, while the anionic resin replaces negative ions with hydroxide ions. When the hydrogen combines with the hydroxide, pure water is formed, removing dissolved salts.

A water softener is a device used to treat water hardness caused by the presence of calcium and magnesium salts. The device contains a tank filled with ion-exchange resin that replaces these salts with sodium ions, thus softening the hard water.

When hard water passes through the water softener tank, the resin granules trap calcium and magnesium ions and replace them with sodium ions. This reduces water hardness and prevents scale buildup in pipes and appliances.

The SMBS injection system is a water treatment system that injects sodium metabisulfite into the water line to remove chlorine or dissolved oxygen. This system is commonly used in desalination plants, RO systems, and boilers to protect equipment from corrosion.

The SMBS system is used for several reasons, the most important of which is removing chlorine before RO units to protect reverse osmosis membranes from damage, as well as removing dissolved oxygen in boiler systems to reduce corrosion and extend equipment life.
